Instructors'Profiles

 

Brian Garrow: Brian is the owner & tennis director of the Las Palmas Tennis Shop. He is also the director and head coach of our year round Junior Academy. He was US Open semifinalist (1990) and Australian Open Quarterfinalist (1991). He has had a world ranking of #92 in singles and #12 in doubles on the ATP Tour. He was also an NCAA Champion while playing #1 UCLA. He has coached at UCLA and Pepperdine, both ranked #1 nationally. Brian enjoys all facets of teaching whether it is mechanics, strategy or physical conditionning for any age and level of player.

Ed Cop: Ed is n active tournament player. He was nationally and internationally ranked in the 30 & 35 age division. His teaching skills are ideal for the aggressive and advanced serve and volleyer.

Casey Louie: Casey played #1 singles for UC Berkeley and played on the professional circuit. He was also consistent #1 NCTA Men's Open player. Casey joined the professional staff at Las Palmas in 2000. He coaches our year round Junior Academy. He is also actively involved in our Summer Junior League and teams up with Ricoh Stasio to run our Summer Camps, ensuring that all the kids have a great time while learning tennis or improving their existing skills. He is available for private and group instruction.

Leticia Mc Caig: Leticia comes to us from Venezuela where she was #1 player and represented her country in the Federation Cup Team. She was also a consistent top 5 player in the NCTA Women's Open division. She has an abundance of playing and teaching experience, so please tape into her knowledge whether you want private instruction or a more informal setting

Mike Mendoza: Mike has been a professional instructor for Las Palmas since 1978. He is an accomplished player with a strong background in junior tennis. He is an experienced soft spoken & patient teacher who enjoys offering a helping hand to the hesitant beginner and providing everyone an opportunity to enjoy the lifetime game of tennis. Mike is available for private and group lessons.

Rick Newman: Rick has been teaching at SMTC for over 30 years and hs worked with players at every level of the game. He is also an accomplished player, he was ranked#15 in the NCAA, divisionIII and was #5 in NorCal Senior Men's 3.5. Rick coaches the boys and girls's varsity tennis teams at the Fremont High School leading them both to the Central Coast Section Championships. He is an experienced and dedicated USPTA & USPTR certified tennis coach who can help bring out the very best in your game. Rick conducts morning and evening doubles clinics and is available for group classes as well as private lessons.

Mark Shaban: Mark is our expert physical fitness staff member. He is certified as physical fitness trainer and as tennis teaching professional. He manages our "CARDIO TENNIS" which is a fun group activity featuring heart pumping drills to give players of all abilities a high energy total body workout. Mark is a dependable hardworking teacher who will teach you tennis and will push you into shape. Mark is available for private lessons and group classes .

Priya Solomon: Priya comes to us from Madras, India where she played tournament tennis and earned her certification as a professionl tennis instructor and sport psychologist. She coached the Harker Middle School tennis team. Priya is a USTA lifetime member and has taught for over twelve years and enjoys teaching children and adults from beginner to intermedian levels. Priya is available for private and group instrucion.

Ricoh Stasio: Ricoh has been with Las Palmas since 1991 and is USPTA certified. Ricoh played for the UNLV tennis team in Division ! He enjoys working with all levels of players whether it is for USTA league teams or USTA junior league players. He coaches our year round Junior Academy. In the summer, Ricoh coaches our Summer Junior League and joins Casey Louie in conducting camps for youngsters from 6 to 18 years of age. If you want to take your game to the next level. Ricoh is your instructor.

Jan Young: Jan has been playing tennis since 1964 and won many local tournaments when he was playing for the San José State Tennis Team. After twenty eight years as Licensee Pro/ Manager of SMTC he decided to transfer his leadership to his star pupil, Brian Garrow. He has devoted most of his adult life honing skills, correcting strokes, perfecting timing and hitting millions of practice balls to his students. Tennis has soared as a sport during his tenure, bringing joy and exhilaration to hundreds of local servers, volleyers, and smashers. Jan is available for private lessons as well ad group classes.
