Sunnyvale Stripes: Who are they?

The Sunnyvale Stripes stepped onto the Las Palmas Tennis Courts with a new status last Fall.
They are the new kids on the block, the newest addition to Sunnyvale’s Women’s’ Interclub team. This B1, 3.5 team, is not really new. In fact, the faces are all familiar to Sunnyvale: Monica Donavan, Linda Fong, Glory Tang, and Ruth Sabb to name a few veterans. This group had been playing at Sunnyvale for many years under the name of South Bay Interclub, home courts at Las Palmas. About 15 years ago, when my Aunt Billie Lee captained the team, it was called the South Bay Chinese Club, though its members have been international for many years.

Today, I captain the team. I do the overall scheduling for the team, although the team members each take a turn at captaining for a couple days during the season. I learned many techniques from Marilyn Payne, the Sunnyvale Stars Captain. We two captains decided on Stars and Stripes last year to distinguish ourselves as two different teams from Sunnyvale for scheduling purposes.

The Stripes play interclub matches with other B1 and A2 teams from the area and range from Ladera Oaks off Alpine Road, to Silver Creek, to Almaden Swim and Racket. They play 2-4 matches a month on Thursday mornings, or other days if the away clubs have scheduling problems. The team sometimes needs 3.5 subs so if you are interested please email .
